Euro 2008
From the perspective of an "England" football supporter, living in Spain, there seemed little to interest me in the recent Euro 2008 tournament. After all there were no "home" countries playing, not even Scotland, who have tended to reach these finals.
From the outset, I predicted that Spain would win. Was this based on the fact that Spain is now my home, and I am officially a Spanish resident? Possibly that was the case, but I also did not fancy any of the other teams to win. Germany are always very mechanical in the approach, which is absolutely boring and France are a team that is now "over the hill" and still living on world cup glory. Holland show flashes of brilliance and I cannot forgive Portugal for getting Beckham sent off and beating us in the semi-final. Spain played with flair and imagination, 1-0 in the final did not tell the whole story, it could have been much more. It was reported that Michael Ballack, of Germany would not play in the final because of injury. He did play, but did not help his country's cause by his nagging fouls on the the Spanish players. He was off the pace, apart from one shot in the second half he did absolutely nothing to warrant his elevated status in World Football. Even without Villa the prolific scorer of Euro 2008, Spain were menacing, through the pace of Silva and the front running of Torres, who scored the winning goal. Here in nearby Ciudad Quesada, celebrations went on into the night, with plenty of alcohol consumed and many many fireworks. It is Fiesta time in a few towns round here and this just created another excuse to let off steam. Shame that England were not in the tournament, but the best team won and all in all it was a trouble free tournament. Via Espana!
