Knife Crime in the UK
The current "vogue" in the UK at the moment, appears to be the senseless maiming and killing of each other by gangs of teenagers, and young people. The UK government are continuing to come up with policies to tackle this, all seemingly, written on the back of a matchbox. The latest such uttering from the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, is to make people found to be carrying knives,go to a hospital to see the victims of such incidents and/or to make them see inside prisons, where they will be told by some convicted "yob", who has now seen the light, how he has reformed. I perceive this as some form of attention seeking action, just to get on the TV, not a genuine attmpt to "go straight". Too many young people have died this year in Britain, at the hands of knife wielding children. It very rarely seems to be a 1 on 1 situation, as there are usually three of four arrests made. This points at gang rivalry. The fallacy behind the proposals above, are that these kids do not fit into a conformity of moral code. They do not watch TV, they definitely don't watch news programmes, in which the relatives of victims plead for the killings to stop. They do not read newspapers, and do not listen to adults. So the problem remains: HOW DO YOU GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS? It seems to be a problem with the British Government, who are so wrapped up in their own world, in Westminster, not to be aware of what the cause and effect of their policies are on people. Tony Blair made a speech back in 1997, before the general election that Labour would "get tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime". Great rhetoric, not backed up by subsequent positive action. I do not pretend to have any answers to these problems, but agree with the Tories, who say that a holistic approach is needed, not just "sticky plaster" patch ups. |
