Should Britain join the Euro?
By David Bates
As the British pound tumbles towards parity with the Euro (today's rate is 1.067 euros to the pound)Tony Blair's words of a few years back come to mind. He said that if the exchange rate fell below 1.20, there would be a case for looking at entry into the Eurozone. Of course there will be the usual furore about preserving the Britishness of the pound, and demands for a referendum on the subject. However, it is my view that if you join a club, you go along with all the rules, and do not select the bits you like. It does not make any sense for the UK to be outside the Euro currency system , when it claims to be a major player in the EU. I believe the "BRITISH" Euro notes have been printed already, and are in a warehouse in Holland. If this is true, it cannot be too far away before Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown make the decision to go in. |
