Should the BBC broadcast a charity appeal for Gaza Victims?

By David Bates

There is a lot of protest going on in the UK, about BBC TV and Radio refusing to broadcast an appeal for a charity seeking help for the innocent victims of the Israeli response to years of rocket attacks by Hamas. This charity appeal clearly deals with victims of a "political" situation, and from a news point of view the BBC cannot be seen to take sides. Unfortunately the peace activists, who take the view Isreal was over aggressive in its actions, are suggesting the BBC is NOT being impartial, but very much pro-Israel.

The BBC does get involved in charity appeals, with a regular scheduled programme from time to time, as well as "Children in Need" and "Comic Relief". Ostensibly the causes have many strands to them, some of which must be to help people , who have been caught up in some kind of violence and political unrest.

Perhaps their refusal to broadcast the appeal is aimed at keeping the conflict in the public eye, as it does appear that illegal weapons may have been used by the Israelis, such as phosphorous bombs.

I know and understand too little about the conflict. I am one who does not believe that force and war resolves anything. But my voice is so small in the scheme of things, to be heard.

The BBC is not always impartial in its reporting anyway, often cutting off parts of speeches to create the story they want to portray. One good example of this is over the credit crisis, when shwoing Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England , saying something on the lines that "Britain is in recession" at that point the speech eas cut. On othernews channels they played the next part iof the speech, which was "but we have turned the corner". This puts a whole different slant on things.

Impartiality is just broadcasting facts, surely, not going into hours of pointless discussion, which creates a "frenzy" in the minds of the watching public.

So I say, Come on BBC, if you are impartial, be consistent and not choosy as to what you decide to broadcast.
